THE RAINBOW

Rainbows are a symbol of resurrection, of hope and of diversity.  I recently came across this version of a traditional Indian legend....: Once upon a time all the colours in the world, red, green, blue, purple, orange, indigo and yellow started to quarrel; each claimed that they were the best, the most important, the most useful, the favourite.

Green said, ‘Clearly I am the most important.  I am the sign of life and hope.  I was chosen for grass, trees and leaves.  Look out over the countryside and you will see green everywhere.’

Blue interrupted, ‘You only think about the earth, but what about the sky and the sea?  It is water that gives life and the clouds draw this up from the blue sea. The sky gives space and peace and serenity.’

Yellow chuckled, ’You are all so serious.  I bring laughter, fun and warmth to the world.  The sun is yellow.  Every time you look at a sunflower the whole world starts to smile.  Without me there would be no fun.’

Orange started to blow its own trumpet next, ‘I’m the most important, I’m the most important,’ ‘Oh no you’re not,’ shouted purple and indigo who had been very quiet up to this point.  Orange said, ‘I’m the colour of health and strength.  I carry all the most important vitamins.  Think of carrots and pumpkins, oranges, mangoes and paw-paws.  I don’t hang around all the time, but when I fill the sky at sunrise or sunset my beauty is so striking that no one gives another thought to any of you.’

Red could stand it no longer.  It was very angry and shouted out, ’I’m the ruler of you all: blood, life’s blood.  I am the colour of danger and bravery. Without me the earth would be as empty as the moon.  I am the colour of passion and love; the red rose, poinsettia and poppy.’

Purple rose to its full height.  It was very tall and spoke with great pomp, ‘I am the colour of royalty and power.  Kings, chiefs and bishops have always chosen me for I am a sign of authority and wisdom.’

Indigo spoke much more quietly than all the others, but just as determinedly, ‘Think of me.  I am the colour of silence.  You hardly notice me, but without me you all become superficial.  I represent thought and reflection, twilight and deep waters.  You need me for balance and contrast, for prayer and for inner peace.

And so the colours went on boasting.  Each convinced that they were the best.  Their quarrelling became louder and louder.  Suddenly there was a startling flash of brilliant white lightning; thunder rolled and boomed.

Rain started to pour down relentlessly.  The colours all crouched down in fear, drawing close to one another for comfort.   Then rain spoke, ‘You foolish colours, fighting among yourselves, each trying to dominate the rest.  Do you not know that God made you all, each for a special purpose, unique and different?  He loves you all.  He wants you all.  Join hands with one another and come with me.  We will stretch you across the sky in a great bow of colour as a reminder that God loves you all, that you can live together in peace; a promise that God is with you – a sign of hope for tomorrow.’

Have a wonderful and colourful summer

After a fantastic Southwark Weekend #33 do come along and meet our new Cursillistas!!

NATIONAL UltreyaGB is one of the highlights of our Cursillo year. Last year over 400 attended in Durham Cathedral. This year we celebrate this great day in Canterbury – a place steeped in Christian history. If you have been before you don’t need reminding what a wonderful occasion it is. If you haven’t been before – you’re in for a treat, and a day you will remember for a long time! I look forward to meeting you and sharing a hug!

CURSILLO LEADERS WORKSHOPS (CLW)

These weekend workshops arranged by the national BACC organisation are especially designed for cursillistas who may like to explore becoming more involved with how Cursillo is run, perhaps through helping to staff a diocesan weekend or joining the Secretariat. These interesting and  enjoyable events are held in various parts of the country but all offer  a deeper understanding of Cursillo and wider fellowship with cursillistas from other dioceses, and great accommodation/food etc! Several people in Southwark have attended previous CLWs so do ask Deirdre for details if you might be interested. Dates for 2008 are shown above.

SERVANT COMMUNITY

The working groups who organise the various parts of Southwark Cursillo are still seeking volunteers to join in the Servant Community tasks. The groups cover Weekend, Pre-Cursillo and Post-Cursillo planning. If you would like to know more, or possibly lend a hand, please contact members of the Secretariat. Groups usually meet 3 or 4 times a year to discuss and plan ways forward and future events.
